Retired Army Sergeant First Class Harold Kovolenko, 66, of Fayetteville, Noprth Carolina, died Friday in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Sergeant Kovolenko served in the Army for 20 years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was in the Special Forces and received two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Sergeant Kovolenko also worked for the North Carolina Department of Correction before retiring.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Gregory Lowchy. Burial with military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
Sergeant Kovolenko is survived by his wife, Joyce L. Kolovenko of the home; six daughters, Monica Kovolenko, Virginia Kovolenko, Joyce M. Kovolenko and Alexis Kovolenko, all of Fayetteville, Jennifer Woodyard of Kansas and Anna Pierce of Rockingham; a brother, John Kovolenko of Ohio; three sisters, Irene Davtovich, Delores Burns and Virginia Redovian, all of Ohio; and a grandson.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
