Robert Mallory Berry was born at “Beechlands” in Henry County, Kentucky, 28 Jan 1846, son of Edmund Taylor and Sarah Francis (Taylor) Berry.
Married Mary Augusta Brady 9 October 1895. No issue. He died 19 May 1929 in Tryon, North Carolina.
He received appointment from Kentucky 31 January 1862 and attended the United states Naval Academy, January 1862-June 1866. He was promoted to Captain, 11 February 1901; Rear Admiral, 29 July 1906; and placed on the retired list, 28 January 1908.
Admiral Berry served in the South Atlantic Station during the Spanish-American War; as Commandant, Naval Station and 6th Naval District, Charleston, South Carolina, September 1904-March 1905; asCommandant, Navy Yard and Commander, 8th Naval Dist, Pensacola, Florida, May 1905-July 1906; as Commandant, Navy Yard and Commander, 5th Naval District, Norfolk, Virginia, July 1906-December 1907; was at home and awaiting orders, December 1907-January 1908; placed on the retired list, 28 January 1908. 1846-1929.
Following his death in 1929 he was buried with full military honors in Section 4 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife Mary Augusta Berry (1870-1928) is buried with him there.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
