Colonel William W. Harvey Jr. of Austin, Texas, died Thursday, February 8, 2001, in Austin. He was 82.
Colonel Harvey was born on October 26, 1918, in Jefferson City. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in business administration, and played varsity basketball for the Tigers.
After graduating, he received a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in World War II as an armored branch officer in North Africa and Italy, leading troops at Oran and Anzio. Colonel Harvey was awarded the Purple Heart, a Silver Star for gallantry in action, and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
Colonel Harvey later served as a White House aide during the Truman Administration, and was stationed in Portugal, Indonesia, and Brazil, among other peacetime postings.
Throughout his career, Colonel Harvey continued his education, receiving a master’s degree in international affairs from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He served on the faculty of the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, and was head of the ROTC department at Kansas State University, where he also coached varsity golf.
In 1970, after retiring from the Army, Colonel Harvey moved to Austin and founded a successful business.
Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
Colonel Harvey is survived by his wife, Jeanne Bradley Harvey (died 5 January 2004); his son Frederick Warner Harvey; three brothers, Jack Harvey, Don Harvey and Jerry Harvey; one sister, Patricia Jeans; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
