From a contemporary press report:
Hugh C. Taylor, 79, a retired fireman with the Kearney Fire Department, died of cancer, February 12, 2000, at his home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mr. Taylor was born in Massachusetts and as an infant moved to Harrison, New Jersey. He played guard for the Harrison High Football Team and graduated in 1941.
Mr. Taylor enlisted in the US Army and served with the 45th Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Southern France and Voges Mountains. His decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Eastern Mediterranean Campaign Medal with Arrowhead, one Silver Star, one Bronze Star, The American Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf, A Croix de Guerre and French Fourragere. He was appointed to the Kearney Fire Department in 1946, serving 33 years at Engine Co. 3, retiring in 1978.
He was preceded in death by his son, Hugh C. Taylor Jr., and his mother and father. Survivors include his wife, the former Jane E. Martin; son, William and daughter-in-law, Laurette Taylor; a brother, William of New Jersey; one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. A 10 a.m. graveside service will be held Thursday, February 17, 2000 at Arlington National Cemetery. Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
