Lieutenant Colonel Reed was the pilot of a F4U-4B Corsair fighter with the Marine Fighter Squadron 312, Marine Air Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing.
On July 30, 1951, while on a combat mission near Pyongyang, North Korea, another F4U-4B was hit by anti-aircraft fire, went out of control and struck his aircraft, causing it to crash. Lieutenant Colonel Reed was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
