Spanish-American War Reports:

Captain Zerah W. Torrey, who was wounded in the leg in the advance on Santiago, was born in Massachusetts, and appointed from that State a Cadet at the United StatesMilitatry Academy on June 14, 1876. He was graduated on June 12, 1880, and promoted in the Army to Second Lieuetnant in the Sixth Infantry.

In the following September he was detailed to frontier duty at the camp on White River, Colorado, where he remained until August 1881. He saw subsequent serviceat Forts Cameron, Douglass and Thornburg, Utah.

While on duty at Fort Douglass on June6, 1886, he was appointed First Lieutenant and on June 1, 1888, was transferred to Fort Lewis, Colorado, where he remained until March 1890.  He was made Regimental Quartermaster February 1, 1890, and occupied that post for several months thereafter.  He attained his present rank as Captain of CompanyD, Sixth United States Infantry on November 19, 1896.
