Died on September 14, 1997, at his residence in Fairfax, Virginia, the beloved husband of Joan Dumary Ballou.
Born in Washington, D.C., he attended Norwich as an honor graduate; attended University of Florida receiving degrees in english and masters in journalism. He was the son of the late DeForrest Ballou, Jr. and Emily McCauslan. He was a member of The Church of the Ascension and a veteran of the US Army. He was an enlisted soldier and then an officer in the United States Army totaling 30 years of service.
He served in Germany and Korea (non-combat) and in Vietnam setting up armed forces radio and TV stations. He was an Instructor of Strategic Studies at the Command and General Strategic College from 1970 until 1973. He retired from the military in 1976.
Mr. Ballou was the Editor of American Defense magazine for 13 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the National Press Club. He was a Trustee, Treasurer and parishioner of the Old Stone Church of the Ascension.
He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Susan Emily Allen of Ellerbe, NC, Anne Ballou Hinte of Woodbridge, VA; one son, DeForrest Ballou, IV of Manassas, VA; one sister, Emily Fry of Westfield, NJ. A memorial service will be held September 30, 1997 at 12:45 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery, with entombment following the service.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
