Balmer, Jesmond Dene (1895-1979)
Born in Pullman, Washington on March 30, 1895. Attended the University of Washington.
Enlisted service with 346th Field Artillery September 1917-June 1918. Commissioned in the Field Artillery in 1918. Duty with 4th Field Artillery Brigade in World War I, including battles of St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne.
Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Purdue 1935-1936 and the University of Florida 1937-1938. Staff Officer in Operations Division of the War Department General Staff March 1942- June 1942. Commandant of the Artillery School June 1942-January 1944. Artillery Commander of XXI Corps January 1944-August 1945.
Retired in January 1953.
Served with the CIA 1953-1965.
Decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Commendation Ribbon.
Died on November 24, 1979.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
