Maynard M. Nohrden – Colonel, United States Marine Corps

Died at San Diego Hospice on January 12, 1999, after a short illness.

He was born June 1, 1912, in Charleston, South Carolina, where he attended the University of Charleston before entering the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Upon his graduation in 1936, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to the Marine barracks, Navy Yard, Charleston, South Carolina.

While attached to the 1st Brigade, Fleet Marine Force, in Quantico, Virginia, he married Dorothy Blitch, sister of Jack Blitch, his Naval Academy roommate.

During WWII, Maynard commanded 1st LVT Battalion, 1st Marine Division which was engaged in combat operations in the South Pacific. He specialized in the development and utilization of amphibious track vehicles. After the war, Maynard transferred to the Supply Corp. After duty in Guam, Parris Island and South Carolina, he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He was then assigned as Supply Officer of the following units: Air Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic, 1st Marine Air Wing in Korea and Fleet Marine Force, Pacific.

Upon his retirement, he joined the Honolulu Construction and Dredging as an engineer. Moving to San Diego, he worked in real estate. In 1971, Maynard married Lib Moreau, who had two children, Cindy and Phillip. Subsequent to her death, he married Mary Millington Moore Lacey on May 17, 1986. Mary had two children, Jack Cobb Moore and Cassandra Mhara, by her first husband, Jack Moore, who was lost in air combat early in WWII. Mary also had two other children, Pamela and Raymond Lacey, by her second husband. Maynard is survived by his wife, Mary; two children, Maynard M. Jr. and Eulalie Nohrden; eight grandchildren, Michael, James, Nancy, Peter, Stephen and Timothy Nohrden, Paul and Mark Ligeski. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 28, at 12:45 p.m. at Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103, in Maynard Nohrden’s memory.


Retired Marine Col. Maynard M. Nohrden, 86, a former Realtor, died Jan. 12 in a local hospice. The funeral will be at 12:45 p.m. Thursday in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery, Fort Meyer Old Post Chapel. Burial will be directed by Gawlers Funeral Home of Washington, according to Glen Abbey Funeral Home of Bonita.

Colonel Nohrden was born in Charleston, a son of Julian Nohrden and Oriole Walsh Nohrden. He attended the College of Charleston and was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He was assigned to the Marine barracks, Navy Yard in Charleston, and Parris Island, South Carolina. He was a Marine veteran of World War II. He was married to the late Lib Moreau.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Millington Moore Lacey; a son, Maynard M. Nohrden Jr.; a daughter Eulalie Nohrden; and eight grandchildren.
