Lieutenant Lee was the pilot of a F2H-2 Banshee jet fighter with Fighter Squadron 11 aboard carrier USS KEARSARGE (CV-33). On December 30, 1952, while attacking camouflaged supply buildings east of Majon-ni, North Korea, his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire and crashed.
For his leadership and valor, Lieutenant Lee was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Gold Star, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
