Nathaniel Alanson Burnell (1897-1976)
Born on September 13, 1897 in Westbrook, Maine, the brother of Ray Lawrence Burnell.
Commissioned in the Coast Artillery Corps from West Point in 1919.
Served in the Philippine Islands 1921-1923. Instructor at the Coast Artillery School 1933-1938. Graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1939 and the Naval War College in 1940.
Commanding Officer of 613th Coast Artillery 1942-1943. Brigadier General in September 1943. Commanding General of 74th Antiaircraft Artillery Brigade, then 52nd Antiaircraft Artillery brigade, finally 31st Antiaircraft Artillery Brigade January 1943-March 1946.
Reverted to Colonel in March 1946. Retired as Brigadier General in August 1957. Decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit and Bronze Star.
Died on June 27, 1976.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
