Denton W. Elliott, 84, who was deputy director of chemical sciences for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research before his retirement in 1985, died of congestive heart failure December 25 at the Asbury Methodist Village’s Wilson Health Care Center in Gaithersburg.
Commander Elliott had a 33-year career with the Office of Scientific Research, beginning in 1952 as a research administrator.
He was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He graduated from Otterbein College and received a master’s degree in chemical science from Ohio State University. He took doctorate-level courses at Columbia, Johns Hopkins and Georgetown universities.
During World War II, he served in the Navy as a deck and engineering officer on two destroyers in the Pacific. He entered the Naval Reserve after the war, then retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 1974.
He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Grace United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg. He also was a trustee of Otterbein College and a volunteer in the national Youth for Understanding exchange program.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, the former Louise Bowser; three children, Jon Terrence Elliott of Otis, Mass., Darcy McDonald of Arlington and Patricia Jo Elliott of Irvine, Calif.; two brothers; and four grandchildren.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
