Joseph Anthony Jansen – Colonel, United States Army

Joseph Anthony Jansen, 81, a retired Army Colonel who served in three wars, died March 7, 2005, of a staph infection at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria. He lived in Fairfax County, Virginia.

After ending his military service in 1974, Colonel Jansen became director of personnel at the Federal National Mortgage Association in Washington. He retired in 1982.

Born in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, Colonel Jansen skipped seventh and eighth grades and graduated from high school at age 16. He then worked for the Lawrence Electrical Co. in Cincinnati while attending classes at Xavier University. At 19, he was admitted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was in an accelerated class that graduated early.

He joined the Army Corps of Engineers and was assigned to Berlin with U.S. occupation forces. His job was rebuilding airfields, which were used during the 1948 Berlin airlift.

Colonel Jansen earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951. He served in the Korean War for 15 months and later became an officer at Fort Belvoir’s Officer Candidate School and at West Point. Among his subsequent assignments were a stint in Long Bin, Vietnam, and at the Pentagon. He lived in Fairfax County since 1968 and retired from the military in 1974.

Among his awards were the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star and the Air Medal.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Waynewood Citizens Association in Fairfax and was a lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Reds.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Emily Jansen of Fairfax County; six children, Joseph Jansen Jr. of Butler, Pennsylvania, John Mark Jansen of Sterling, Paul Michael Jansen of Lorton, Thomas Matthew Jansen of Greenwich, Connecticut, Robert F. Jansen of McLean and E. Anne Wardinski of Burke; a sister; a brother; and six grandchildren.
