Born at Boston, Massachusetts, February 18, 1839, the son of Colonel Edwin Burr and Sarah Stedman Sprague Babbitt, he graduated from West Point in 1861. He married Fannie, daughter of Surgeon McDougall, United States Army, October 22, 1861.
He served in the United States Army from 1861, becoming Colonel, April 7, 1899 and on duty with the Ordnance Department at Powder Depot, Dover, New Jersey, until he retired on February 18, 1903.
He thereafter made his home in Dover until his death in 1903. He is buried in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Frances McDougall Babbitt, is buried with him and his son Major General Edwin Burr Babbitt is buried in an adjacent site.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
