Captain Frank J. Scolpino, 73, of Jackson, New Jersey, formerly of Mount Laurel, died Wednesday at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. He served in the Navy for 37 years before retiring.
He entered the Navy Prep School in October 1947 through June 1948. He entered boot camp in July 1946 through September 1946. He was stationed at the Naval Air Station, Seattle, Washington, from October 1946 through September 1947. He was a 1953 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. He also graduated from the Navy Supply Corps School, Bayonne, New Jersey.
He served aboard the USS Heyliger (AKA-54), Brooklyn and the USS Intrepid (CVS-11), Norfolk, Virginia. He served at the Aviation Supply Office, Philadelphia. He also served at the Glenview Naval Air Station, Glenview, Illinois. He served in Agana, Guam, with Airborne Early Warning Squadron Three (VW3) & Carrier, and the All-Weather Attack Squadron 35 (VA35). He also served in Naples, Italy. He served at the Defense Industrial Supply Center, Philadelphia.
He was a member of The Retired Officer’s Association. He was a lifetime member of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association.
His awards include the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation.
He was a communicant of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Jackson.
Born in Englewood, he lived in Mount Laurel for many years before moving to Jackson 15 months ago.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Mary Ann Orecchio Scolpino; a daughter, Sharon F. Ogden of Frederick, Maryland; two sons, Brian J. Scolpino of Sterling, Virginia, and Anthony J. Scolpino of East Greenwich, Rhode Island; two brothers, Robert Scolpino of Deptford, and Anthony Scolpino of Tenafly; and three grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the George S. Hassler Funeral Home, 980 Bennetts Mills Road, Jackson. The funeral Liturgy will be offered 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Church, 935 Bennetts Mills Road, Jackson, with the Rev. Scott Shaffer officiating.
Interment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Kidney Fund or to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
