Jack Holmes Berryman, 77, a retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service official who was in charge of wildlife enhancement, pesticide appraisal and monitoring and other national programs, died of emphysema March 3, 1999 at Potomac Hospital.
Mr. Berryman, who had lived in the Washington area since 1964, first began working for the Wildlife Service in 1950 as an assistant regional supervisor in the branch of federal aid.
After working as an associate professor at Utah State University and serving two years as president of the Wildlife Society in the mid-1960s, he rejoined the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and assumed responsibility for programs to minimize damage caused by wild animals.
He was chief of the division of technical services from 1974 to 1977 and chief of the office of extension education from 1977 until his retirement in 1979.
In retirement, Mr. Berryman, a prolific writer on wildlife management and natural resource and land management, served as executive vice president of the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
He was born in Salt Lake City. He graduated from Westminster College in Salt Lake City and received a bachelor of science and a master’s degree in ecology from the University of Utah.
During World War II, he served in the 2nd Marine Division in Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa and in the occupation of Nagasaki. He was wounded twice and received the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
His civilian honors included the Distinguished Service Medal from the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Aldo Leopold Memorial Award and Medal, a prestigious honor bestowed by the Wildlife Society.
Survivors include his wife, June S. Berryman of Lake Ridge; and two children, Richard Berryman of Arlington and Marjorie Porter of Woodbridge.

On Wednesday, March 3, 1999, in Lake Ridge, VA. He had emphysema. Beloved husband of June Featherstone Berryman; father of Richard Berryman and Marjorie Porter. Born July 28, 1921, in Salt Lake City, UT, the son of the late Richard and Theodora Berryman. He received his education at Westminster College in Salt Lake City (A.A.)and at the University of Utah (B.S., 1947, Science; M.S., 1947, Ecology). Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 22, 1999, at Fort Myer Chapel. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jack H. Berryman Institute for Wildlife Damage Management, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, College of Natural Resources, Utah State University, Logan, UT 84322-5210. A memorial service will be held at the Cosmos Club at a later date.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
