Born on June 6, 1867, he was awarded the Medal of Honorwhile serving as Gunner’s Mate First Class at Santiago de Cuba on June 2, 1898 during the Spanish-American War.
He died on Febraury 7, 1938 and was buried in Section 7, Grave 10222, of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Nadejda P. Charrette (March 23, 1891-March 31, 1943) is buried with him.

In connection with the sinking of the U.S.S. Merrimac at the entrance to the harbor of Santiago de Cuba, 2 June 1898. Despite heavy fire from the Spanish batteries, Charette displayed extraordinary heroism throughout this operation.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
