COMMANDER T. W. RYAN, GRANT’S AIDE, DIES
With Late President on World Trip
Served in Two Wars and Boxer Rebellion

NEW YORK, June 9, 1930 – Commander Thomas W. Ryan, U.S.N., retired, who was an aide to President Grant during the latter’s trip around the world, died on Friday night in the Naval Hospital, Brooklyn, New York, of heart disease, at the age of 72.  A widower, he is survived by a son, Thomas F. Ryan; a brother, Colonel J. J. Ryan, U.S.A.; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Ennis, and a niece, Miss Mary E. Ennis, with whom he lived at 446 Ocean Avenue, Brooklyn.

Commander Ryan was graduated from Annapolis in 1878.  In the war with Spain he commanded the gunboat Peoria and accompanied the first American troops to land in Cuba.  He saw service in China during the Boxer Rebellion and at the entrance of the United States into the World War he was immediately recalled to active duty.  He commanded several convoys, and acted as senior adviser to Admiral Usher at the Brooklyn Naval Yard.  For gallantry in action he received several citations.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow in the Church of the Holy Cross, Brooklyn.  Burial will be in the National Cemetery at Arlington.
