Edward Mallory Almond, Jr., was born in Alabama on 7 December 1921. He graduated with the United States Military Academy class of 1943. He was an Infantry Captain and was killed-in-action in the European Theater of Operations on 19 March 1945.
His father was Edward Mallory Almond, Sr., Lieutenant General, United States Army, and they are buried next to one another in Arlington National Cemetery.

In my library I have a copy of the 1994 West Point Register of Graduates which provides some biographical information based on West Point’s records. In regard to Captain Almond I found that he is listed as having been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, and Two Purple Hearts. It also states he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, and served as Company Commander Co. L of the 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Division.

Son Of General Killed In Action In Germany On March 19
MONTGOMERY, Alabama, April 13, 1945 – Notification of the death of Captain Edward Mallory Almond, Jr., the only son of Major General Edward M. Almond and Mrs. Almond, has been received here. He was killed in action in Germany on March 19. He had just returned to his company after recoverying froma wound received on January 16.
Captain was a member of the class of June 1943 at the United States Military Academy. He is survived by his parents and a sister, Mrs. Margaret A. Galloway, widow of Major Thomas T. Galloway, who was killed in action over France last July. (1944).

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
