Joseph James Jackson, a retired Army Colonel, age 86, died on Tuesday, July 17, 2001. Born in Cedarhurst, New York, he was a Hampton, Virginia, resident for 31 years.
His service to his country lasted 34 years, with tours of duty all over the world during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He began his career with the 7th Regiment in New York City in 1938. Graduating from the Armed Forces Staff College and the Army War College, he spent three years in the China-Burma-India Theater as an OSS Officer during World War II. He served one year in Korea and then served as the Military Attache in Bucharest, Romania from 1962-64. Col. Jackson later was the commander of the 7th Special Forces Group (Green Berets) from 1966-67 and served one year in Vietnam. His final assignment brought him to Fort Monroe in Hampton as the Post Commander from 1970-73 where he retired.
Colonel Jackson graduated from The George Washington University receiving Masters Degrees in both International Affairs and Business.
Colonel Jackson continued serving his country and community for a period of time by becoming the Military Chairman of the United Way and Chairman of the American Red Cross, Hampton Roads Chapter.
Colonel Jackson is survived by his wife of 54 years, Juanita ”Sam” Jackson; his daughter and her husband, Anne DelCasino Benjamin and Donald Benjamin of Manhasset, NY; his son and his wife, Joseph Fowler Jackson and Rebecca Cressy of Arlington, VA; his grandson, Joseph Cressy Jackson of Arlington; and his brother, Howard F. Jackson of Shelter Island, NY.
A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 8 in Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests any expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Wythe Volunteer Rescue Squad, 1430 Kecoughtan Rd., Hampton, 23661.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
