Andrew Steele Horton, Lieutenant. Colonel, United States Air Force (retired), died on November 23, 2003 from heart failure. A native of Virginia, he had lived in the Jacksonville Beaches area since 1998.
An adventurer by nature, Colonel Horton was a member of the Plaisted North Pole Expeditions of 1967 and 1968. The expedition reached the North Pole by snowmobile, and was the first over-ice expedition since Perry in 1909.
Born in 1918, Colonel Horton as a youth lived in China, Haiti and the Washington, D.C. area. He attended Lafayette College where he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1941.
In 1943 he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and served in the China-Burma-India theatre as an electronics officer in B-24s in the 14th Air Force “Flying Tigers” ( 425th Bomber Squadron, 308th Bomber Division). During the Korean War, he served as a Judge Advocate with the Air Force in Fairford, England.
A lawyer by training, Colonel Horton received his LLD from the University of Virginia and his LLM from George Washington University.
Colonel Horton is survived by daughter Susanne F. Barker (Jeffrey) of Atlantic Beach, Florida; son, Dr. Andrew Steele Horton, Jr., (Odette) of Norman, Oklahoma; former wife of 50 years, Ann Griffith Horton of Atlantic Beach, Florida; grandchildren Philip Horton (Natalie), New York City, Samuel and Caroline Horton, Oklahoma, Matthew Barker, Florida, Jessica and Meredith Barker, Virginia, and his sister Louisa Horton Hill, New York.
Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Fort. Myer Chapel on Monday, April 12, at 11 a.m. with a reception following the burial.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
