The son of Lieutenant General Claire Lee Chennault by his first marriage, he was a veteran of both World War II and Korea and at the time of his father’s death he was the Air Attache to the United States Embassy in Madrid, Spain.
He was born on May 20, 1913, died on December 4, 1977, and is buried beside his father in Section 2 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
