Kenneth P. Fischer, 74, an Army colonel who retired in 1975 as chief of electronic media in the Pentagon armed forces information office, died September 3, 1998 at Inova Alexandria Hospital, Virginia. He had a heart ailment.
After he retired, Colonel Fischer was administrative coordinator of the Society of American Travel Writers for 20 years.
He served in the Army in Vienna after World War II and was later posted to air defense and advisory assignments in Denmark, Thailand, Korea and Germany.
Colonel Fischer, who lived in Alexandria, was a native of New York and a graduate of the University of Maryland. He received a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin.
His honors included three Army Commendation Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal and a Legion of Merit.
He was an usher at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Alexandria and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Ilonka Fischer of Alexandria; four children, John K. Fischer of Charleston, W. Va., Susan E. Fischer of Madison, Wis., Patricia A. McAllister of Sacramento, and Kenneth J. Fischer of Parker, Colo.; a sister; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, 4329 Sano St., Alexandria on Monday, September 14, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., and where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 5 p.m. Interment Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors, Tuesday, September 15, at 9 a.m., with friends and family gathering at the Administration Building at 8:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 7203 Poplar St., Annandale, VA 22003 or the American Cancer Society, 346 Maple Ave. East, Vienna, VA 22180.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
