His private memorial in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery reads:”To my beloved husband William Hall Driggs, Commander, United States Navy,
Class of 1869, United States Naval Academy.
Member of the Military Order of Foreign Wars.
A distinguished ordnance officer having been awarded many patents in ordnance,
including the Driggs Schroeder and Driggs Seabury Rapid Fire Guns.
Medal for engagement with Spanish Torpedo Boat ‘Terror’
at San Juan, Puerto Rico, June 22, 1898.
August 21, 1847-January 6, 1908.”

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
