Retired Colonel James Anderson Lillard, 75, Clarksville, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at Veterans Hospital, Nashville, Tennessee.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
Colonel Lillard was born February 5, 1925, in Memphis, Tennessee, son of James Elmer Lillard and Edna Rushing Lillard.
Colonel Lillard was retired from the United States Army, serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and he was previously a veteran of the Merchant Marines, serving in World War II.
He received a Combat Infantryman Badge with Star, Korea and Vietnam; Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters; Bronze Star Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and “V” Device; Department of Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters; Department of Defense Joint Service Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal; National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Korean Service Medal with four Bronze Campaign Stars and Arrowhead; Army of Occupation Medal, Germany; Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star; United Nations Service Medal Korea; Army Distinguished Unit Citation, Korea; Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Korea; and the Master Parachutist Badge.
He also received from the Republic of Korea the Presidential Unit Citation and from the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm; Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star; Armed Forces Honor Medal, First Class; Presidential Unit Citation with Palm; Civic Action Medal with Palm; and Master Parachutist Badge.
In addition, in a ceremony held in September 2000 at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, Colonel Lillard was posthumously awarded a Silver Star for service in Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Wooten Lillard, Clarksville; two sons, James David Lillard, Memphis, John Matthew Lillard, Vienna, Virginia; five daughters, Julia Roberts, Rollinsford, New Hampshire, Anneliese Kennedy, Lincoln, Nebraska, Donna Migliaccio, Vienna, Virginia, Margaret A. Lillard, of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Joan Boadway, Clarksville; a brother, Edward Lillard, Memphis; a sister, Doris Fleeger, Germantown; and 12 grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, TROA Scholarship Fund, Tennessee Retired Officers Association or Clarksville Montgomery County Library Book Fund.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
