Killed in 1958 when an unarmed Air Force C-130, which was on a world-wide project to study radio waves, was shot down by Soviet aircraft near Kars in Soviet Armenia. Seventeen men were on board and the Soviets claimed that the C-130 was on a spy flight. Six bodies were returned to the United States US but the State Department was never able to determine what happened to the remaining eleven. He was a flier in both WWII and Korea.
NOTE: On 2 September 1998 the remaining airmen from this flight were buried in Section 34 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
