Born at Washington, D.C. September 13, 1846, Carlisle Patteson Porter was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, December 20, 1866, from Washington, D.C. He was promoted through the various ranks and finally retired as a Lieutenant Colonel on September 20, 1899.
He died at Washington, D.C. on May 20, 1914 and was buried three days later in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery.
He was a typical sea-going Marine Officer, serving on board the California, Plymouth, Juanita, Swatara, Constitution (Old Ironsides), Portsmouth, Trenton, Lancaster (twice), and the Newark. His shore service included duty at Naval Station, Havana, Cuba; Washington, D.C.; Annapolis, Maryland and Norfolk. He was the son of Admiral David Dixon Porter and the father of General David Dixon Porter.
May 22, 1914 – Lieutenant Colonel Carlisle Patterson Porter, 67 years old, died on Wednesday in the Naval Hospital in Washington after a year’s illness. Lieutenant Colonel Porter was born in Washington and was the son of Admiral David Dixon Porter of Civil War fame, and Georgia Anne Patterson, also of a prominent Naval family. His grandfather was Commodore David Porter who served with distinction in the War of 1812.
Lieutenant Colonel Porter served as an Acting Midshipman from 1861 until 1864 and was in the battle of Fort Fisher. He was made a Second Lieutenant of theMarine Corps in 1866, a LieutenantColonel in 1899 and retired in the same year. He is survived by his widow, a son, Major David D. Porter, U.S.M.C., now stationed at Philadelphia, and a daughter Mrs. J. S. Simmons of Washington.
There is also another child of Harriet and Erastus A. Capron buried in Arlington National Cemetery. She is Carrie Capron and became the wife of Carlisle Porter USMC.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
