Jess W. Henley, 88, a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Army and Social Security administrator, died after a heart attack June 5, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Easton. He was a resident of McLean, Virginia.
Born in Seloca, Alabama, Colonel Henley joined the Army in 1935 and served in the North African and European theaters for four years during World War II. After the war, he was stationed at various military posts in Germany and in the United States, including Fort Meade, Florida.
Upon retirement from the Army in 1959, Colonel Henley worked for the Social Security Administration, adjudicating disability cases until retiring from that job in 1981.
He was a member of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in McLean, and his interests included golfing, the Washington Redskins and horse racing.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Agnes Una Sugrue Henley of McLean; six sons, Gene Henley of Sandy Spring, Brian Henley of Severna Park, Michael Henley of Glen Burnie, Joseph Henley of McLean, William Henley of Easton and John Henley of Annandale; five daughters, Deirdre Ohler of Parker, Colo., Laura de Armond of Las Vegas, Mary de Armond of Federalsburg, Md., Patricia Frasier of Vienna and Geraldine T. Drake of Fairfax; a brother; a sister; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Also survived by 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Ft. Myers Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery, on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at 2:45 p.m.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
