COLONEL FRED BROWN, FORMER ILLINOIS ROTC CHIEF, DIES
World War Hero Will be Buried at Arlington
Washington, August 31, 1941 – Colonel Fred R. Brown, 65 years old, former commandant of the University of Illinois ROTC, died yesterday in Walter Reed Hospital.
Colonel Brown, who was born at Streator, Illinois, retired in February 1940, after serving six years at the University of Illinois. He commanded the 368th Infantry and the 58th Infantry in the World War and took part in the occupation of the St. Die Sector, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the occupation of the Marbache Sector and the 2nd Army offensive on Metz. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and was promoted to a Colonelcy in February 1923.
His widow, Mrs. Jennie Brown, survives. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery Tuesday.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
