Born in Sussex County, New Jersey, he earned the Medal of Honor while serving as First Sergeant, Company L, 8th United States Cavalry during the Indian Wars at Hell Canyon, Arizona, on July 3, 1869.
He died on December 7, 1911 and was buried in Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Bertha E. Corbett Bradbury (1850-1928), is buried with him.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
