Edward Ellis Hastings II – Captain, United States Navy

Edward Ellis Hastings II, 76, a retired Navy Captain and former fighter pilot who was also administrator of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf, died of cancer December 25, 1999 at his home in Bethesda.

Captain Hastings retired in 1974 from the personnel review council of the Office of Naval Disability Evaluation. Earlier, he served in light-attack and fighter squadrons, and was operations officer for the commander of Naval forces in Korea and assistant chief of staff for personnel in the Pacific.

He was an assistant navigator during the final year of World War II, and was posted to Korea during the war there. He later directed the international relations faculty at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Captain Hastings was a native of Fryeburg, Maine, and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He received a master’s degree in international relations from George Washington University and did graduate work in management at Harvard University. He also attended the Armed Forces Staff College and National War College.

He retired from the Bell Association in 1985.

He was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church in Bethesda and the Knights of Columbus.

His first wife, Anna Murch Hastings, died in 1961.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Dorothy Ann Hastings of Bethesda; four children from his first marriage, Edward Hastings III of Jacksonville, Fla., Elizabeth Pickett of Swansboro, N.C., William Hastings of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Martha Hastings of Windham, N.H.; three stepdaughters, Lynne Jackson of Salisburg, Pa., Barbara Cuddington of Myersville, Md., and Maureen Jackson of Silver Spring; and 12 grandchildren.

On Saturday, December 25, 1999, of Bethesda, MD. Beloved husband of Dorothy Ann Hastings and the late Anna Murch Hastings; father of Edward Hastings, III of Jacksonville, FL, Elizabeth Pickett of Swansboro, NC, William Hastings of Flagstaff, AZ and Martha Hastings of Windham, NH. He is also survived by three step-daughters, Lynne Jackson, Barbara Cuddington and Maureen Jackson; and 12 grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church, 9601 Old Georgetown Rd., Bethesda, MD, on Thursday, December 30 at 11 a.m. Interment with Full Military Honors, Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at 11 a.m. Please assemble at the Administration Building by 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Holy Cross Hospice, 9805 Dameron Dr., Silver Spring, MD 20910.
