Alfred Avery Young III – Captain, United States Navy

Alfred Avery Young III, 69, a Navy submarine Captain who retired in 1979 as Director of the Submarine Maintenance Monitoring and Support  Office, died of cancer August 25, 1999 at his home in McLean, Virginia.

He was a native of New London, Connecticut, and a graduate of the University of Connecticut and the Navy Nuclear Power School.

He joined the Naval Reserve as an enlisted man in 1947. He was later captain of the nuclear sub USS Henry Clay in the Atlantic and the Pacific, and served on other submarines and as a division commander in San Diego. He was assigned to antisubmarine work in the 1960s.

Captain Young worked for 14 years at TRW Corp., where he was a project manager for the strategic sea-lift program.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Myers Young of McLean; a daughter, Meredith Young Baratz of Allendale, N.J.; a brother; and two grandchildren.

Of McLean, VA, on August 25, 1999, at his residence. Beloved husband of Cynthia M. Young; father of Meredith Young Baratz; brother of Stephen Wightman Young; grandfather of Caroline Young Baratz and Avery Anatole Baratz. Services will be held at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on Thursday, September 16, 1999, at 11 a.m. Interment Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Hospice of Northern Virginia, P.O. Box 922, Falls Church, VA 22040-0922.
