Born at Lynn, Massachusetts, February 7, 1905, he received a BS in Civil Engineering, Norwich University in 1927, an LLD, in 1963. He graduated from the Army Command and General Staff School, 1947, the Air War College, 1950.
He married Helen Sigrid Nelson, June 15, 1929 and worked as a Civil Engineer, 1927-33. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, reserve Cavalry in 1927 and advanced through the grades to Major General in 1958.
He served in Moroco, Sicily, Normandy, North France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, World War II. He was commander, 67th Armored Regiment, 2nd Armored Division, 1945-46. He was then assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Research and Development, 1949. Commander, Combat Command B, 2nd Armored Division, 1951-53. Assigned to the Army General Staff, research and development, 1954. Chief, Military Intelligence , also commander of Fort Wayne, Michigan, 1955-56. Chief, Army Maneuver Test and Evaluation Group, 1955-56. Commander, 8th Army Support Command, Korea, 1955- 56. Commander, US Military Assistance Group to Thailand, 1959-62. Assistant Chief-of-Staff, Continental Army Command, Fort Monroe, Virginia, 1962-63, Chief-of-Staff, 1963.
Trustee, Norwich University, 1964-69.
Medals included Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with 2 oak leaf clusters, and numerous other service medals. Legion of Honor, Croix de Guerre with palm (France), Order of Fatherland 1st Class (USSR). Member, Association of the Army, US Armor Association. He made his home at Williamsburg, Virginia, and died there March 23, 1980. He was buried with full military honors in Section 11 of Arlington National Cemetery.

Wife of the late Major General Briard P. Johnson, HELEN NELSON JOHNSON died Sunday, August 22, 1999, in Manchester, Connecticut.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, June and John Archibald of Malabar, FL, Barbara and Charles Muckenhirn of Northfield, Illinois, and Helen and Bernard Johnson of Manchester, Connecticut; 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 25, 1999, 11 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 60 Church St., Manchester, CT 06040. Interment, Arlington National Cemetery, Monday, August 30, 3 p.m. (Those wishing to attend must be at the Administration Building of the cemetery by 2:30 p.m.)
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Emanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
