Joseph Freeman Shelby was botn December 22, 1922, at Lauderdale
Lauderdale County, Mississippi. He died on August 26, 1990, at Washington, D.C.
He was a retired Senior Master Sergeant, U. S. Air Force, a Veteran of World War II and Korea. He was captured by German Forces and held for eighteen months as a Prisoner of War.
He was a tail gunner in a B-17 aircraft. He was hidden by a friendly German farmer for two days until he picked up by the German military. He was held at Stalag 17B Kriegie, Germany. He was liberated at the wars end by American forces.
He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
