COMMANDER J. S. ARWINE
Executive of the Battleship Kansas Dies at His Home in East Orange
August 28, 1924 – Commander John S. Arwine, 44, of the United States battleship Kansas, died at his home in East Orange, New Jersey, yesterday, from illness contracted while at sea. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery on Monday.
Commander Arwine was born in Indiana and was graduated from the Naval Academy in 1902. He was formerly executive officer of the Melville, flagship of Admiral Sims’ fleet during the World War. In 1919 the Melville took her position in mid-Atlantic to supply fuel for the seaplanes of Captain Frederick P. Raynham and Harry G. Hawker, among the first aviators to attempt a transatlantic flight.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
