Born on December 15, 1916, he served with the 10th Mountain Division in World War II.
He died on April 24, 1984 and was buried with other family members in Section 11 of Arlington National Cemetery.
Evelyn Whalley Nichol Twombly Stewart-FitzRoy of Gaithersburg, MD, formerly of Alexandria, VA, passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2007. She was the beloved wife of the late John Fogg Twombly III, Colonel, USA (Ret.) and the late William Wentworth Stewart-FitzRoy, Captain, Royal Navy (Ret.).
She is survived by her children, Elizabeth Twombly Redd (Harry) and Charlotte Helen Twombly (Paul Lim) of Rockville, Maryland, John Fogg Twombly, IV (Joan) of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia and Ellen Twombly Swanson (Eric) of Alexandria, Virginia; grandchildren, James McLaughlin Redd (Hana) of Clarksburg, Maryland, Catherine Redd Hyman (Robert) of Laytonsville, Maryland, and Robert Kent Redd (Vanessa) of Ashburn, Virginia, Laura Lim-Manley (Tim Manley) of Germantown, Maryland, and Lisa WaiWen Lim of Rockville, Maryland, John Fogg wombly V and Richard William Twombly, II of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia; Cody Alexander Swanson and Wyatt Robert Swanson of Alexandria, Virginia; great-grandchildren, Ethan James Redd and Tessa Evelyn Suzanne Redd of Chantilly, Virginia, Victoria Elizabeth Stanek of Frederick, Maryland, Jaqueline Stanek Cagley (Jamison) of Gaithersburg, Maryland and James Nathaniel Hyman of Laytonsville, Maryland and Sophia Evelyn Redd of Ashburn, Virginia; great-great- granddaughter, Kalilah Rose Blake of Frederick, Maryland; step-children, Commander Alan Stewart-FitzRoy, R.N. (Susan) of Havant, UK, Anne Stewart-FitzRoy of Salisbury, Connecticut, James Stewart-FitzRoy of London, UK and Roderick Stewart-FitzRoy (Linda) of Edinburgh, Scotland. Also survived by five step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 2955 River Rd. West, Goochland, Virginia 23063 on Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. Interment service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on Wednesday, April 25 at 3 p.m. Everyone attending, please meet at chapel at 2:30 p.m.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
