BRIGADIER GENERAL ROBERT E. HOMMEL; EX-ASSISTANT CHIEF OF MARINES
WASHINGTON, August 29, 1983 – Robert E. Hommel, a retired Brigadier General and former Chief of Staff of the Marine Corps, died of cancer Wednesday at Anne Arundel General Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. He was 71 years old.
A graduate of the 1934 class of the United States Naval Academy, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In the mid-1950s, as a Colonel, he was Chairman of the Egyptian-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission.
He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1957 and became Assistant Chief of Staff at Marine Headquarters in Washington.
General Hommel was buried Friday at Arlington National Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Eugenia Kirk, of Annapolis, and by two sons, Peter K. of Staunton, Virginia, and John M. of Glen Burnie, Maryland.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
