Earl C. Covell, 68, of 10 Taylor St., Franklin, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in the emergency room of UPMC Northwest, Franklin.
Born Sept. 4, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Earl C. and Anna Belle Parham Covell.
Covell attended Clarion University, Venango Campus, where he majored in business administration.
He retired from the U.S. Army in 1974 as a SFC E-7 with duty in Korea and Vietnam. He also was a machinist for several local manufacturers.
Covell served in the Korean War with the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955; Co. B, 112th Infantry National Guard, Franklin, from 1956 to 1957; and with the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1974, having been stationed in Germany, France, Korea, Okinawa and Vietnam.
He was awarded the German Europe Occupation Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, U.S. Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Service Star, Republic of Vietnamese Campaign Medal with 60 device, Sharpshooter Badge/Carbine Bar, and Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar.
Mr. Covell was an avid hunter and model airplane builder.
He was married Feb. 14, 1980, to Lydia L. Elesorio, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Steven E. Covell of Franklin and Earl “Bud” Covell and wife, Deb, of Utica; two daughters, Carmella E. Covell and Sherie L. Barrett, both of Franklin; and five grandchildren, Sara McElhaney of Pittsburgh, Eric Lowrey of Seneca, Amy Covell of Clarion and Anna and Leigh Covell of Franklin.
He also is survived by a sister, Audrey Whitehead of Dunedin, Fla.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Covell was preceded in death by a son, Larry Warren Covell; and a sister, Nancy V. Covell.
There will be no visitation.
Mr. Covell will be buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
The Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home in Franklin is in charge of arrangements.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
