GENERAL ELIPHALET WHITTLESEY
WASHINGTON, October 1, 1909 – General Eliphalet Whittlesey, for twenty-five years Secretary of the Board of Indian Commissioners, died here yesterday. General Whittlesey was a native of New Britain, Connecticut, where he was born eighty-eight years ago. He was graduated from Yale College in 1842 and for several years afterward traveled around the country studying the conditions at different universities. He returned to become a professor at Bowdoin College where he served until the outbreak of the Civil War.
He served throughout the campaign under General Howard and before he was mustered out of service he was brevetted Brigadier General.
After the war be became professor at the Howard University, in which capacity he served for seven years. Honorary degrees were conferred on him by the Howard University and Yale College gave him the degree of LL.D.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
