James Linn Lewis – Colonel, United States Army

James Linn Lewis, 88, a retired Army Colonel who specialized in engineering and logistics, died February 1, 2003, at the Belvoir Woods Health Care Center at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, where he lived. He had congestive heart failure and hypertension.After his military retirement in 1968, Colonel Lewis was a disaster assessor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and its predecessor organizations. He retired from FEMA in 1983.

He was born in Bokchito, Oklahoma, and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1938. During World War II, he commanded an Engineer Battalion in the Aleutian Islands and later in the China-Burma-India theater. Later, he served in Germany, Korea, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky, where he was district engineer from 1960 to 1963. He came to Washington in 1963 and retired from the Army Materiel Command.

While serving in the Army, he received a master’s degree in engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and a master’s degree in logistics from Harvard University .

His wife of 61 years, Miriam M. Lewis, died in 2000.

Survivors include two children, Cynthia L. Jacobus of Alexandria and Carolyn L. Quinn of Orange, Virginia; a sister; and three grandchildren. A son, James M. Lewis, died in 1992.
