Born in Washington, D.C. on December 5, 1882, the son of Lieutenant General Nelson Appleton and Mary Sherman Miles.
He graduted from West Point in 1905 and attended the Army War College, 1921-22, the Command and General Staff School, 1926-27. He married Yulee Noble, November 24, 1909. Their children were: Nanita (Mrs. Allen Richmond Wight), and Nelson Miles.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, 1905, and advanced through the grades to Major General in 1942. He served in the Cavalry, Coast Artillery, Field Artillery, and several times on the General Staff, and as military attache in Europe, 1912-40.
He was the Chief of Army Intelligence at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. He was a Member of House of Representative, Massachusetts Legislture in 1947-50.
He died at home in Boston and was buried in the Miles Family Mausoleum in Section 3 of Arlington National Cemetery on October 12, 1966.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
