Gilbert Ignatius Laskowski – Tech 4, United States Army Foreign Service Officer

Gilbert Ignatius Laskowski, 82, a retired officer of the United States Information Agency who served in Iran, Cameroon, Ghana, India, Laos, Greece and Zaire, died of melanoma February 26, 2004, at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, Virginia.

Mr. Laskowski, who had lived in Alexandria on and off since 1963, was born in San Antonio. He attended the University of Texas and then served in the Army in Europe during World War II. His unit liberated concentration camp inmates in Nordhausen, Germany, late in the war. His military decorations included five awards of the Bronze Star.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, he worked for the U.S. High Commission in Germany. His work included bringing democratic notions of education and politics to the Hesse region.

After the war, Mr. Laskowski graduated from the University of Texas. He later received a master’s degree in business administration from George Washington University.

In the mid-1950s, he became a Foreign Service officer with USIA. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Alexandria. His avocations included travel, photography, philately and genealogy.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Magda A. Laskowski of Alexandria; four children, Patricia L. Kristobek of Kensington, Thomas J. Laskowski of Austin, Suzanne M.L. Collier of Kingwood, Tex., and Jessica M. LaFlamme of Ashburn; a sister; and 10 grandchildren.

Of Alexandria, Virginia, departed this life on February 26, 2004. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Magda A. Laskowski; his children, Patricia L. Kristobek (Rich), Thomas J. Laskowski (D’Ann), Suzanne M. L. Collier (Mike) and Jessica M. LaFlamme (Steve); 10 grand- children and sister, Lucille Williams. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 29, with a recital of the Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 1st. Both services will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 8710 Mount Vernon Highway, Alexandria, VA. An inurnment service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made for research and prevention of melanoma to the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center or to Good Shepherd Emergency Assistance in care of Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
