Karl Joseph Bernstein – Rear Admiral, United States Navy

Rear Admiral Karl J. Bernstein died on the morning of January 31, 1998, after a long illnes in Orange Park, Florida.

Admiral Bernstein began his Naval Career in March, 1942, enlisting in the U. S. Navy at the age of 17. His service in WWII included the north African Campaign, the Sicilian Invasion, and the Landing at Salerno. Following the war, he entered the U. S. Naval Academy and graduated in 1949.

After Duty aboard the Carriers USS Siboney and USS Midway, he received his Aviator Wings in 1952 and began a distinguished career in Anti-Submarine Warfare. His service included tours of duty in both the Atlantic and Pacific – with VP34 and VP8, followed by his command of VP-10 and VP-31. After a tour in Italy at NATO Allied Forces South, he served as commanding officer of Naval Air Station Jacksonville from 1974 to 1976.

He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1976 and commanded the Icelandic Defense Force and Fleet Air Keflavik until 1978. RADM Bernstein completed his Naval Career as Commandant of the Washington Naval District in 1981, and retired to Orange Park, Florida.

He was a graduate of the Naval War college in Newport, Rhode Island, and the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on March 31, 1925, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jean; four children, Mark, Brian, Elizabeth, and Amanda; and seven grandchildren. Private funeral and burial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that any remembrances be made to Hospice of Northeast, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257.

Admiral Bernstein was buried in Section 7 of Arlington National Cemetery following a full military honors ceremony.
