Henry Schuldt Murphey – Major General,United States Army

Henry Schuldt Murphey, 95, a physician who was Commanding General of Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 1962 until retiring from the Army in 1965 as a Major General, died June 26, 2001, at a hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a heart attack.

General Murphey was a 1928 graduate of Haverford College and a 1932 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania medical school. He joined the Army in 1932 and served in the Pacific and in Europe during World War II, receiving the Army Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

After retiring from the Army, he served as a state hospital director in Philadelphia until 1973, then lived in Arizona until moving to Mineral, Virginia, four years ago after a stroke.

On Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, VA, of a heart attack. Survived by son, William M. Murphey, and daughter, Elizabeth Murphey von Frankenberg, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Honors on Thursday, July 26, commencing at the Fort Myer Chapel at 9 a.m.
