Born on October 28, 1838 in Rhode Island, he attended West Point but left in 1860 before graduting. He was appointed Captain, Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers, October 21, 1861; Major, Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers, February 25, 1865.
He was Colonel of the 6th United States Infantry as of March 27, 1865 and was also breveted Brigadier Genral, United States Volunteers, for Civil War Service. He served as Chief of Staff for Generals Robinson, Stoneman and Heintzelman. He continued in the Regular Army until he retired in 1900 as a Lieutennt Colonel.
He died on December 9, 1901 and was buried in Section 1 of Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Elizabeth Frances Potter (March 14, 1841-July 12, ????), is buried with him.
Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
