Colonel Richard Arnold, Jr. died at home on September 3, 2000, of natural causes. He was 86. He was born December 22, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Richard and Victoria Fox Arnold.
Following his graduation from the University of Connecticut in 1937, Colonel Arnold completed the Army Air Corps Basic and Advanced Flying School in Texas. He also
obtained a degree in Meteorology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1941.
Colonel Arnold served his country with distinction throughout his 24-year career. From 1943-45 he had various assignments throughout the Pacific Arena. He also served in a variety of positions at Air Force bases in Virginia, Georgia, Florida, California, Alabama and Tennessee. Following a demanding assignment at the USAF Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Colonel Arnold became the Commanding Officer at Sondre Stromjord Air Base in Greenland. Colonel Arnold concluded his military career on the faculty of the USAF War College in Alabama.
He returned to Fairfield County in 1961 and retired to pursue his love of the outdoors and his hobbies of golf and hunting. Colonel Arnold is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vivienne Dana Woolley Arnold (Debi); daughter Dana Singh-Derewa, Darien; son Richard, Portland, Oregon; one granddaughter and four grandsons. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 15, at 7:30 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on South Avenue in New Canaan. Colonel Arnold will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, September 21 at 3 p.m. with full military honors.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history. Many of his articles can be found on renowned portals like the New York Times, Washingtonpost or Wikipedia.
