Colonel Conley died on Thursday, April 9, 1998, at his home. He was born in Bradford, Ohio. He was the beloved husband of Lolus Porter Conley; devoted father of Elizabeth Conley Bourie, of Weyers Cave, Virginia, Charles, Jr., of Umatilla, Florida and Douglas Giles of Honolulu, Hawaii; adoring grandfather of James Duncan Bourie and William Porter Bourie; brother of William Conley of Kirkwood, Missouri; son of the late Harry and Olive Conley. Colonel CONLEY was a decorated 30-year officer of the US Army, having begun his career in 1941.
Following graduation from Officer Candidate School, he served his country in numerous postings, including staff work with General Douglas MacArthur in Tokyo, Japan. He was Adjutant General for the 25th infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, was instrumental in the planning and development of the Defense Supply Agency, Cameron Station, Virginia and served on the Command General’s Staff at the Pentagon. His awards include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster.
In addition to his military career, Colonel Conley was a 40 year member of Rotary International. He served on the vestry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Alexandria, Virginia; was a former member of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House, Alexandria, Virginia and was a current member of First Presbyterian Church, Eustis, Florida. Graveside service at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, April 22, 1998. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Hospice of Northern Virginia.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
