Jeannette C. Adams, 79, an Air Force wife and former teacher, died September 27, 2005, of Alzheimer’s disease at Falcons Landing nursing home in Sterling, Virginia. A former resident of Alexandria, she also had lived in Waynewood.
She was born Jeannette Malloy Chichester in Macon, Georgia, where she attended Wesleyan College for two years. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was an English major and a member of the Chi Omega sorority.
She met her husband-to-be, a West Point cadet, on a blind date on Christmas Eve in 1945, filling in for a girlfriend who was dating her brother. After marrying in 1947, she embarked on a career as an Air Force wife. She raised three children through 20 assignments and as many relocations, including two tours of duty in Japan, with the first during the Korean War.
At various times Mrs. Adams ran a Cub Scout pack, teen club and officers’ wives club. She learned Chinese cooking and ikebana , the art of flower arranging, in Japan. Returning to the United States, she obtained a California teaching certificate from San Bernardino State College and taught second grade in Rialto, California. She also worked for the Hampton Chronicle newspaper in Westhampton Beach, New York.
Mrs. Adams was a dedicated reader, with a special interest in Southern writers. She also enjoyed genealogy, cooking, gardening, quilting and her cats. She was a member of Quilters Unlimited and the Garden Club of Waynewood, where she and her husband lived in retirement since 1980. She had moved to Alexandria in 1977.
Survivors include her husband, retired Air Force Lieutenant General Ranald T. Adams Jr. of Waynewood; three children, Ranald T. Adams III of Hyde Park, New York, Mary Adams Lafsky of Great Falls and Jeannette Adams Neale of Seattle, Washington; a brother; a sister; and three grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Heritage Presbyterian Church, 8503 Fort Hunt Rd., Alexandria, VA 22308 on Thursday, October 6, 2005 at 11 a.m.
Graveside services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, October 27, 2005 at 2 p.m.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
