George Litman Whalley, 92, a retired Air Force Colonel who also was an official with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, died of pneumonia January 14, 2007, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia.
Colonel Whalley, of Alexandria, was a native of Uniontown, Pensnylvania. He first served in the military when he was with the Army Air Forces in China during World War II.
He then worked as a civilian for the Census Bureau before being recalled to active military duty during the Korean War.
In subsequent assignments, he served as deputy director of statistical services at Air Force Europe Headquarters Command in Wiesbaden, Germany, and at Headquarters Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
Colonel Whalley was stationed at the Pentagon as a staff officer on the Air Force base automation program.
He retired from the Air Force in the late 1960s and began working in Washington as deputy director of data automation at HUD. He retired again in 1982.
His military decorations included the Bronze Star Medal.
In his free time, he enjoyed photography, woodworking and making stained-glass art.
His wife of 55 years, Lilia C. Whalley, died in 2002.
Survivors include two sons, Chris Whalley of Forest Hills and Jim Whalley of Leesburg; and two grandsons.

An Air Force Colonel who retired in 1969 from military service, died of pneumonia on January 14 at 21:05 p.m. at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He lived in Lincolnia Park. Colonel Whalley was a native of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of the University of Nebraska (Omaha). During World War II, he was commissioned through the Officer Candidate School program at the Harvard Business School, Cambridge, Massashusetts.
He served in China during World War II and returned to the U.S. Civil Service at the Census Bureau after that war. He was recalled to active duty in 1951 and served in the Pentagon. His other assignments included Deputy Director of Statistical Services at HQ USAFE (Wiesbaden, Germany) and at HQ Strategic Air Command (Offutt AFB, Nebraska); the Director of Data Services at HQ 15th Air Force (Riverside, California); and a staff officer on the Air Force Base Automation Program at the Pentagon.
His honors included the Bronze Star Medal (Meritorious) and Air Force and Army Commendation Medals.
After he retired from the military, he reentered the U.S. Civil Service as the Deputy Director of Data Automation at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C., where he retired in 1982.
During his life he was an avid photographer, wood-worker and reader. His academic passions were statistics and cryptography.
His wife of 55 years, Lilia C. Whalley died in 2002. Survivors include two children, Dr. Christopher E. Whalley of Forest Hill, Maryand, and James O. Whalley of Leesburg, Virginia; as well as two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted with full military honors at 9 a.m. Friday February 9, 2007 at Ft Myer Chapel with interment to follow at Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army.
