USS AKRON VICTIM
Commander Frank C. McCord
ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey, April 5, 1933 – Commander McCord, in charge of the ill-fated Akron, was a veteran of a quarter-century of naval service of naval service, and also a veteran in the handling of aircraft. He had to his credit thirteen years of actual sea service, and before his selection on January 2 to command the Akron he was the executive officer of the Los Angeles and later the executive officer of the Akron. Since he took command of the ship, he had taken her out on a trip over Washington, D.C. and on an eighty-one hour round-trip cruise to the Canal Zone.
Born in Indiana on August 2, 1890, Commanded Mccord entered the naval service at the age of 17, on July 5, 1907. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on June 4, 1931. He was a graduate of the Naval Academy. He commanded a torpedo boat during the war and later served as executive officer of the Lakehurst Naval Air Station.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret McCord, whom he married four years ago. They had no children.

McCord’s Funeral Tomorrow
ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey, April 12, 1933 – The search for the Akron dead was handicapped yesterday by a strong east wind, which forced the smaller Cost Guard ships to shelter, and by poor visibility.
No more bodies were found during the week, and but little wreckage. One of the thirty ships that have been sweeping the sea off Barnegat Lightship for the last eight days picked up a piece of board, apparently from the equipment of the Akron, but that was all. The search will be resumed today.
Plans for the funeral for Commander Frank Carey Mccord, who was in charge of the Akron when she crashed in the sea a week ago, were announced by naval officials. Services will be held in the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, Washington, at 9:45 A.M. tomorrow. Burial will be with full military honors in the Arlington National Cemetery.

Michael Robert Patterson was born in Arlington and is the son of a former officer of the US Army. So it was no wonder that sooner or later his interests drew him to American history and especially to American military history.
